When and Where: Saturday, June 27, 2026, starting at 5 am. The course and exact start location depend on snow and stream conditions.

What: A mountaineering jaunt originated by James Varner in honor of the legendary John Cappis, one of the founders of the Hardrock 100. The course is approximately 50k with 19,000 ft of elevation gain, ranging from 9,300 ft to 13,300 ft. It features an unmarked course (GPS track provided) and is mostly off-trail. The cutoff is 19 hours (some courses may allow 20 hours). Participants get credit for how far they get within the time limit.

Before You Register: This trek is open only to members of the Sky Pilots Endurance Navigators and qualified participants with suitable mountain experience. All applicants will be waitlisted until qualifications are reviewed.

Not a Normal Run: Finishing the full 50k within the cutoff is very difficult. Experience with off-trail travel in burly mountains like the San Juans is required. There are numerous hazards, and participation should not be taken lightly. Support is very limited, with some calories and fluids at basic checkpoints. Much of the course is remote, and rescue could take hours or days. No pacers, limited crew access, and GPS is strongly advised. Due to steepness, altitude, and rugged footing, participants average 1-2 mph.

You Must Be Qualified: Runners need ample experience in mountains, including off-trail terrain, navigation, and assessing weather. Experience on 100-mile races like Hardrock, Plain, Wasatch, etc., is helpful but not sufficient on its own. You must sell organizers on your abilities.

Namesake: John Cappis: One of the founders of Hardrock and a pioneer of the sport, finishing 3rd at Western States in 1978. He was known for his ability to navigate the San Juan Mountains and organize difficult mountain runs.
