About the Event

Hatcher Pass Races

The Hatcher Pass Races offer a challenging and scenic experience in one of Alaska's most beautiful areas. The event features multiple distances, including a Marathon, a 50-Mile race, and a 3-person Relay for both the Marathon and 50-Mile distances.

Race Details:

  • Marathon: Approximately 26.2 miles with significant elevation gain (around 3900ft). The course is slightly longer than a standard marathon and features a challenging uphill first 25 miles followed by a downhill finish.
  • 50 Mile: Approximately 54 miles with 5000 ft of elevation gain. It involves a steep initial climb, a turnaround point, and then follows the Marathon course back up.
  • Relay: A 3-person relay where each member runs a leg of either the Marathon or the 50-Mile course.

Start Times:

  • Hatcher Pass 50/Relay: 5:00 AM AKST from Hatcher Pass Lodge.
  • Hatcher Pass Marathon/Relay: 9:00 AM AKST from N. Shirley Towne Dr, Willow.

Aid Stations: 7 aid stations are located every 2-5 miles along the course, providing water, electrolytes, and snacks. Participants are encouraged to bring their own nutrition.

Pacers & Crew: Specific rules apply for pacers and crew vehicles to manage traffic and ensure safety. No pacers are allowed for the marathon. One pacer and one crew vehicle are allowed per 50-mile participant.

Required Gear: Minimum 16oz water bottle, 400 calories, Head Lamp (50-mile only), Hi-Visibility vest (50-mile only).

Parking & Transportation: Limited parking is available at start/finish areas. Carpooling is highly encouraged. A $5 Alaska State Park permit is required for parking at Independence Mine. This is a point-to-point race with no shuttle service; participants are responsible for their own transportation from the finish line.

Drop Bags: Drop bags will be transported from the start to the finish line. Bags must be marked with the participant's name.
