The John Colter Run is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM MDT. The race begins and ends at Missouri Headwaters State Park, located near Three Forks, MT. Take Exit 278 off I-90 and follow signs to Headwaters State Park and Trident. Carpooling is recommended due to limited parking.
The course is approximately 7 miles long, featuring 1.5 miles of paved/gravel road followed by 5.5 miles of rugged trails. Participants will encounter two railroad crossings, one of which requires going under a bridge through water and mud. The trail is marked with various indicators including rock cairns, flags, and beer bottles. There are two water crossings in the final quarter mile, with the second being the Gallatin River, potentially reaching waist-deep. A safety rope will be provided across the river. Walkers are not permitted, and dogs are not allowed on the course. One water station is located approximately 4 miles into the run, and porta-potties are available at the start area.
Prizes will be awarded to the first 50 runners who beat "John Colter" to the "Beaver Dam" (approx. 6.5 miles). Additional awards will be given to the overall top male and female finishers, age group winners, youngest and oldest runners, and other recognized participants. A post-race party with barbeque, beer, and live music will follow.
The event is supported by Headwaters State Park, BNSF, GCC, Main Street Over Easy, Bozeman Speedy Lube, Bozeman Running Co., Bobcat ROTC, Gallatin County Search and Rescue, Lerhkinds, Yellowstone Bank, Dark Horse Construction, and Muddy Dog Sports (Timing).
