In July 2026, the fourth Mad Max Marathon Running Festival will take place in Broken Hill, NSW, following successful events in previous years. Organized by Brian Haddy of Marathon Adventures, this event is part of a series of companion events in regional Australia.

The Mad Max event has three main goals: to draw runners from across Australia to the unique heritage town of Broken Hill, to promote running among local children and adults, and to raise funds and awareness for the Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation, which provides essential healthcare services and community programs for Aboriginal communities in far western NSW. Participants are encouraged to add a donation to their registration fee to support Maari Ma.

This festival offers a unique chance to explore outback Australia and the historic city of Broken Hill, with its connections to the Mad Max film franchise. The event caters to all abilities and ages, featuring a flat course suitable for elite marathon runners, casual joggers, and walkers.

The start and finish line are at the Broken Hill Racecourse, which offers camping facilities. The marathon, half-marathon, 10km, and 5km events begin with a loop of the Broken Hill Racecourse parkrun. Longer distances continue on flat dirt tracks alongside Racecourse Road and then onto the Silver City Highway. The marathon course is a double lap of the half-marathon course. The 10km, half-marathon, and marathon events conclude with a 2km lap of the racecourse.

The Broken Hill Rotary Club manages the water stations, highlighting the community involvement in the event. All finishers of the 5km, 10km, half marathon, and marathon events will receive an iconic medal, and an event t-shirt is available for purchase. A 10km WALK category is also included to encourage broader participation.

For those interested, there are additional activities available: running the Broken Hill Racecourse parkrun on Saturday morning, visiting the Mad Max 2 Museum at Silverton, and dining at the Silverton Pub or the iconic Palace Hotel.
