The Legendary Jericho Gap: Where Route 66 Tested the Bold Before the Mother Road was tamed by asphalt, the Jericho Gap was a treacherous stretch along historic Route 66 (1926-1936) that challenged every traveler who dared to cross it. This infamous section—just outside the small town of Jericho, Texas—was a muddy, rutted nightmare when it rained, swallowing cars, stranding families, and forcing drivers to rely on the kindness of local farmers with teams of mules to pull them free. It was Route 66 at its wildest, a proving ground for pioneers of the open road. But progress had its price. When Route 66 was rerouted one mile north, Similar to the bypass of Radiator Springs in Pixar’s movie: Cars.
