Dueling Banjos 5K & 10K

Event Overview

The Dueling Banjos 5K/10K is a 2-for-1 race that pairs the extremely hard uphill 5K trail race with a net-negative downhill 10K trail race. This is a race that is meant to test your limits. It sets out to define your ability to climb the steep and rugged terrain of the McMullen Cove trail system in the 5K and then challenge your downhill speed in the 10K descent back to the start. You MUST REGISTER FOR BOTH RACES TO GET A BIB.

The 5K is the by far the toughest 5K in North Alabama with over a 1000 ft climb to the top of the mountain. After a rest at the top, the 10K starts with a net downhill of more than 600 ft, making it a fast and fun reward.

Timeline

The 5K will start promptly at 7 am at the clubhouse at McMullen Cove, AKA the Commons. 38 McMullen Lane, Gurley, AL 35748. The 10K will start from the top of the mountain at 8:30 am.

NEW 23K CHALLENGE

Team up with UAH Spring 8K Road Race for a 23K challenge: complete the Dueling Banjos 5K and 10K in the morning and the 8K in the afternoon at 2 PM. Finishers of all three events will earn a special 23K finishers prize.

Proceeds to Charity and McMullen Cove Trail Committee

Proceeds will benefit childhood cancer research and the McMullen Cove Trail Committee for trail maintenance and development.

Aid Stations

The 5K's main aid station party is at the top of the mountain with tents, a fire, food, and fueling needs (electrolytes, water, S'MORES). The 10K will have one aid station halfway down with water and electrolytes. The finish line will be fully stocked.

Swag

Tech trail t-shirt for all 5K/10K finishers, custom finisher medals for both races, and Fleet Feet Age group and Top 3 Overall awards.

Parking

Parking will be in and around the Commons clubhouse at 38 McMullen Lane. Mention you are here for the race to enter the private community gates.

Packet Pickup

Fleet Feet: Saturday, Feb 28, 2026, 10 AM-5 PM. Race day: 6-7 AM at the Commons Clubhouse.

Post-Race Party

Chili cookout at the clubhouse post-race. Family-friendly event.
