Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial 5K

Runners, walkers, and supporters from across New Castle County will come together on April 23, 2026, at Abessinio Stadium for the 13th Annual Lt. Joseph Szczerba Memorial 5K, a meaningful event honoring the life and legacy of a true Salesian Gentleman and community hero. The race was established in memory of Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba ’85, an 18-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department and proud Salesianum alumnus, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 16, 2011. Founded by his widow, Kathy Szczerba, the event supports the Szczerba Memorial Scholarship, which provides educational assistance to the children of First Responders. Each step taken and mile completed helps continue Lt. Szczerba’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and commitment to others, with all proceeds benefiting the scholarship fund.

Participant Amenities: In addition to a great race tee shirt, all participants are encouraged to stick around for a one-of-a-kind post-race party, featuring: Food, Wine, Beer, Seltzers and soft drinks, Live Music, Equipment displays and demonstrations.

Bib Pick Up & Registration: Thursday April 23rd from 5:30pm until 6:25pm at Abessinio Stadium.

5K Start Time: 6:30pm.

Awards & Age Groups: Overall Male/Female, Overall Male/Female Master, 13 and under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. First Responder Category: Top 3 Male/Female.
