Polar Plunge & Run

Join us in celebrating 20 years of the Special Olympics Polar Plunge! The Polar Plunge & Run is a unique event that allows participants to run, plunge, or do both to support local Special Olympics athletes. Choose from the 5K run, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, or take a chilling plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. The 5K course is open to all ages and skill levels, and participants are encouraged to heat up with the run/walk and cool down with the Polar Plunge.

The event will feature live music, vendors, food trucks, and games, making it a one-of-a-kind special event not to be missed. The event will take place on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Kure Beach Pavilion in Kure Beach, NC. The race start/finish line will be at 105 Atlantic Avenue, and the Polar Plunge will take place on the beach at the same location.

Parking is available at any legal street parking spot in the surrounding blocks, with parking fees possibly applying. The event offers various courses, including the 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, and the Polar Plunge. The 5K is a timed event, while the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is not timed. Fundraising is a big part of the event, and prizes are available for fundraisers. Teams are also encouraged to participate, with prizes available for the biggest teams and top team fundraisers.

To register, you can click on the Sign Up button on the event website. Online registration will remain open until the race starts, but it is strongly encouraged to register beforehand. On-site registration will require participants to scan a QR code with their phone to register digitally. A schedule of events is available on the event website.

By participating in the Polar Plunge & Run, you will be making a difference in the lives of Special Olympics athletes in New Hanover County. The program provides year-round sports training, competition, social events, and summer camp for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The program relies on private and corporate support, as well as the efforts of volunteers, to provide these services at no cost to the athletes or their families.
