The Tau Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated hosts the first annual "Triple Nickle Remembrance Run" on Fort Bragg, North Carolina. We aim to honor and preserve the legacy of trailblazing paratroopers who played a significant role in integrating the US Army. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, known as the "Triple Nickle," was the first all-Black airborne unit in U.S. military history. Formed during World War II in 1943, the battalion represented a significant step in the ongoing struggle for racial equality in the Armed Forces. Despite completing rigorous training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 555th was never deployed overseas due to racial segregation policies and the military’s reluctance to integrate Black soldiers into combat units. In 1945, the Triple Nickle was assigned to a unique and critical domestic mission: Operation Firefly. Partnering with the U.S. Forest Service, they became smokejumpers—paratroopers who jumped into remote areas to fight wildfires. These fires were often ignited by Japanese balloon bombs intended to cause chaos and divert wartime resources. The 555th made over 1,200 jumps during this mission, showcasing their bravery and skill in a non-traditional military role. The battalion was eventually absorbed into the 82nd Airborne Division, helping pave the way for the integration of the U.S. military, which was officially ordered by President Truman in 1948. The legacy of the Triple Nickle lives on as a symbol of courage, resilience, and the fight against racial discrimination.
